EXPANSION OF IDEAS and EXPANSION OF PROVERBS

EXPANSION OF IDEAS & PROVERBS
Ideas:

An ‘idea’ is a thought or suggestion as to a possible course of action. Eg: (i) Make in India program will strengthen Indian economy; (ii) Villages are lifelines of India.  Idea is generally filled with valuable and powerful words that need more explanation and expansion to provide better understanding.  Ideas provide food for thought. They lead for intellectual discussions and they provide solutions to problems also.

Proverbs:
A Proverb is a well-known saying that conveys a general truth or that offers advice on life and behaviour, for example: ‘Honesty is the best policy’, ‘All that glitters is not gold’. Proverbs are simple in form, yet packed with meaning.  Though they consist of short sentences, they contain a lot of wisdom. Proverbs often make use of metaphors to convey their meaning.  (Metaphors are comparisons made between two dissimilar things without using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’ to show that one of them has some quality of the other).

Expansion of Ideas/ Proverbs:
Expansion of ideas or proverbs is a meaningful writing task.  It involves understanding the meaning of an idea or a proverb, what it implies and how it relates to the present time.  To expand a proverb, you will have to explain its meaning and elaborate on its significance by using reasoning and giving examples from real life to convey its truth and wisdom clearly to the reader.

Some guidelines for expansion of Ideas/ proverbs:
1. Read & Understand the Proverb/ Idea:
In the first instance, read the given idea or proverb. Think about the proverb and understand its meaning, significance and implications. In general, the proverbs stand for symbolic messages. So, the words in the given proverb also provide symbolic meanings.
2. Substitute the specific words in the proverbs with General words:
We need to understand the real meaning of the specific words. For example: A stitch in time saves nine. Here, the stitch symbolically means finding a solution to a problem, or addressing a problem. In the same manner, In the proverb – “Make Hay While the Sun shines”, the expressions symbolically refer to “making the best of an available opportunity in time, without wasting it”.
3. Use Anecdotes/ Examples from real life:
Once the symbolic meanings of the words in the given idea/ proverb are known, and the general purpose or objective of the idea or proverb is understood, then think of any examples, stories, anecdotes, or similar proverbs and ideas that support this idea or proverb. Even quotes from books,  films also will help in this stage. With the help of the examples and anecdotes, expand the original idea or proverb.

4. Sum up the Paragraph:
The overall summary of the idea, expanded paragraph should be brought in the concluding lines.
5. Observe the rules of a Good Paragraph:
A good para written for expansion must have 1) unity of thought; (2) order;  (3) coherence;           (4) variety and (5) Expansion. Arrange your thoughts in the logical sequence and write the piece, using simple language and keeping to the usually allowed limit (generally not exceeding one page). Make the opening and conclusion interesting and impressive.
