Florence Nightingale was born in Italy on May 12, 1820. Her great ambition was to become a nurse.  In her days, Nursing was not regarded as a respectable profession. During her training, she even scrubbed the corridor floor along with binding the wounds. Later on she spent much time in the hospitals of London and Edinburgh. She was made the manager and director of a sanatorium where women need to be nursed. The conditions there were not good. But, she changed the entire environment within few days. She gave foremost importance to cleanliness and fresh air and insisted upon open windows.

When Crimean war broke out, her services were sought after much. When soldiers were dying in huge number, Florence Nightingale was there to help.  She had abandoned all her position, facilities and rich background and decided to go there as a nurse. She organized a nursing force comprising of fellow sisters and nurses. There, she performed the duties of a cook, scavenger, house keeper, washer woman, store keeper and general dealer. She even made several visits to the scene of war with the sole intention of accomplishing some reform. She became an angel to the wounded soldiers. During nights also, she used to visit the wards with a lamp. She came to be known as ‘The Lady with the Lamp.’ When she came back to England, she became an invalid.
