EXPANSION OF IDEAS and EXPANSION OF PROVERBS

EXPANSION OF IDEAS & PROVERBS
Ideas:

An ‘idea’ is a thought or suggestion as to a possible course of action. Eg: (i) Make in India program will strengthen Indian economy; (ii) Villages are lifelines of India.  Idea is generally filled with valuable and powerful words that need more explanation and expansion to provide better understanding.  Ideas provide food for thought. They lead for intellectual discussions and they provide solutions to problems also.

Proverbs:
A Proverb is a well-known saying that conveys a general truth or that offers advice on life and behaviour, for example: ‘Honesty is the best policy’, ‘All that glitters is not gold’. Proverbs are simple in form, yet packed with meaning.  Though they consist of short sentences, they contain a lot of wisdom. Proverbs often make use of metaphors to convey their meaning.  (Metaphors are comparisons made between two dissimilar things without using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’ to show that one of them has some quality of the other).

Expansion of Ideas/ Proverbs:
Expansion of ideas or proverbs is a meaningful writing task.  It involves understanding the meaning of an idea or a proverb, what it implies and how it relates to the present time.  To expand a proverb, you will have to explain its meaning and elaborate on its significance by using reasoning and giving examples from real life to convey its truth and wisdom clearly to the reader.

Some guidelines for expansion of Ideas/ proverbs:
1. Read & Understand the Proverb/ Idea:
In the first instance, read the given idea or proverb. Think about the proverb and understand its meaning, significance and implications. In general, the proverbs stand for symbolic messages. So, the words in the given proverb also provide symbolic meanings.
2. Substitute the specific words in the proverbs with General words:
We need to understand the real meaning of the specific words. For example: A stitch in time saves nine. Here, the stitch symbolically means finding a solution to a problem, or addressing a problem. In the same manner, In the proverb – “Make Hay While the Sun shines”, the expressions symbolically refer to “making the best of an available opportunity in time, without wasting it”.
3. Use Anecdotes/ Examples from real life:
Once the symbolic meanings of the words in the given idea/ proverb are known, and the general purpose or objective of the idea or proverb is understood, then think of any examples, stories, anecdotes, or similar proverbs and ideas that support this idea or proverb. Even quotes from books,  films also will help in this stage. With the help of the examples and anecdotes, expand the original idea or proverb.

4. Sum up the Paragraph:
The overall summary of the idea, expanded paragraph should be brought in the concluding lines.
5. Observe the rules of a Good Paragraph:
A good para written for expansion must have 1) unity of thought; (2) order;  (3) coherence;           (4) variety and (5) Expansion. Arrange your thoughts in the logical sequence and write the piece, using simple language and keeping to the usually allowed limit (generally not exceeding one page). Make the opening and conclusion interesting and impressive.

DIGGING – POEM - by Seamus Heaney- Notes - SUMMARY

“DIGGING” – POEM - SUMMARY

“Digging” is a poem written by Seamus Heaney. He is an Irish Poet, Playwright and translator. Haney was considered one of principal contributors to poetry during his lifetime. The poem starts off in the present, moves into the past and then returns to the present and hints at the future towards the end.

While holding a pen between his finger and his thumb, the poet reflects upon the rural history of his family, the men who worked in the field. The poem starts with the poet’s description of his father working under the window with his spade. His father was digging the garden. The notable fact is that the speaker holds a pen like a gun (which is a symbol of the power of the present) while the spade used by his father is a thing of the past. Gradually, looking at his father, the poet goes back to the memories of twenty years past. In the past his father was digging in the potato drills. The poet also used to involve in gathering of the potatoes that were dug by his father. He still remembers their coolness and hardness. The poet says that his father was able to handle the spade just like his father (poet’s grandfather). Now, the memory of the poet further shifts to his childhood days when he saw his grandfather digging a turf. His grandfather used to cut more turf in a day than any other man in their area. The poet also informs how he took a bottle of milk for his grandfather and how he drank the milk and immediately went back to his work.  The poet presents the rural setting by describing the visions and sounds of the field while his grandfather was working. Thus he remembers all the past days of work in the field both by his father and grandfather.

The poet says that now he has no spade to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. The family roots are cut metaphorically. But, the poet says that he too can dig with his pen. Thus, the poem presents both nostalgic feeling of the poet as well as the differences between the occupations from one generation to the other generation. While the past generations used spade to dig the field to do cultivation, the present generation uses the mighty pen to enlighten the society with writings.
