COROMANDEL FISHERS - POEM By Sarojini Naidu

COROMANDEL FISHERS - POEM

By Sarojini Naidu

SUMMARY

·         “Coromandel Fishers” is a poem written by Sarojini Naidu, a famous Indian English poetess and freedom fighter. She was fondly called as “Nightingale of India”.

·         This poem is about the fishermen in the coromandel region. But, metaphorically it reflects the poet’s desire for free India. Thus, through this poem she encourages the people of the nation to hasten their struggle for freedom.

·         Coromandel fishers refer to the fishermen on the Coromandel Coast of South India. ‘Rise brothers, rise’ - means the fishermen called their – men to get ready to go to the sea.

·         The leader awakens the other fishermen that the sun had already risen. The wind is not blowing, means it sleeps in the arms of the dawn like a child. So it is correct  time to start their Journey.

·         They should gather their nets and set the boats free. They are sons of the sea, so they have the right to capture the leaping wealth which means fishes.

·         The fishermen called themselves as the kings of the sea. The narrator hurried his colleagues because they should follow the Sea gull’s call.

·         The Sea gull is an animal that knows where the fishes are. The sea, the cloud and the waves all are close to fishermen like mother, brother and friends.

·         The sea god is the controller of the sea. He will protect them.

·         The fishermen also love the land - the shade of the coconut grove, the sweet smell of the mango grove and sounds in the nature. But the waves and the foam of the sea is more appealing to them.

·         The sun is setting and it is the time to go back to land. So brothers, row the boat to the edge of the sea.

In this poem, the poetess describes the lives of the fishermen. The leader of the fishermen is giving a call to his comrades to start their work early in the morning.

The Night Train at Deoli – Short Story - By Ruskin Bond

The Night Train at Deoli – Short Story

 By Ruskin Bond

SUMMARY - Important Points

·         “The Night Train at Deoli” is a short story written by Ruskin Bond, a famous Anglo Indian writer. This is an interesting story about adolescent infatuation and romantic feelings of two youngsters.

·         The narrator lives in Delhi. Every summer, he used to go to his grandmother’s place in Dehra by Train. The train goes through a small station called Deoli.

·         When the narrator was eighteen years old, he was going to his grandmother’s place one summer. The train reached Deoli station at 5’o clock in the morning. There, he saw a poor young girl selling baskets. She was wearing a shawl. Her face was pale, hair was shining and eyes were black and attractive.

·         The eyes of the young man met with the eyes of the girl. The young man got down the train and went to the tea stall on the platform. She went to him and asked to buy a basket. he finally bought one. He tenderly touched her hand while giving the money. When he went back to his compartment, the girl was looking at him and smiling as long as he could see her.

·         During his return journey also, the young man met the girl. This time, they spoke a few words. The boy got an impulse to take the girl along with him to Delhi. But, he could not express his feelings.

·         He said to her that he would come back again. The girl also expressed her love and interest through her looks and smile. The image of the girl’s face remained in the heart of the young man.

·         The next summer, the young man did not find the girl at Deoli station. He could not get any information about her from the station master  and tea vendor.

·         The young boy felt that the girl stole his heart. He was overwhelmed with the feeling of infatuation and tender love for that girl. He decided that he would one day get down at Deoli and search for that girl.

·         Though the young man travelled many times through Deoli station, he did not dare to break his journey and enter into Deoli village. He feared that he may hear any bad news – she might have left the village, she might have been married, she might have fallen sick, etc.

·         Thus, the story tells about the feelings of tender love during youth in a realistic manner.

ODE TO THE WEST WIND – Poem by P.B. Shelley

ODE TO THE WEST WIND – Poem by P.B. Shelley

Summary - Important Points

·          ‘Ode to the West Wind’ is a poem written by P.B. Shelley, renowned Romantic Poet of England.

·         Shelley wrote this poem in the woods outside Florence, Italy during Autumn season in 1819.

·         This poem is written in the form of ‘Ode’ – which is used to address inanimate things as if they are human beings.  This poem begins on a note of sadness and pessimism but ends on a note of hope and optimism.

·         In this poem, Shelley appeals to the wild west wind of autumn season.

·         In the beginning of the poem, the poet says that the wind scatters the dead leaves and spreads the seeds. The dead leaves become manure and the seeds will grow at later times in faraway places.

·         Thus, the west wind is playing a dual role- as a destroyer as well as a preserver.

·         He also describes how the wind is responsible for carrying the clouds and stirring up violent storms.

·         He also says that the West wind is also responsible for waves in the seas and oceans like Mediterranean sea and Atlantic ocean.

·         The poet recalls his relationship with the west wind in his youth.

·         He expresses his desire to be a dead leaf or swift cloud or a wave. Then, the west wind can carry him freely with its strength.

·         Later, the poet appeals to the West wind to turn him into a lyre (a musical instrument). He asks the wind to play upon him and spread his words to the world.

·         He also asks the wind to become like him.

·         In the last stanza, Shelley expresses his positive spirit. He compares the west wind to a trumpet of prophecy.

·         He says: ‘If winter comes, Can spring be far behind?’ This means - the winter (symbol of troubled days) is not permanent. He hopes for better days to come in the symbolic form of spring season.

·         Every year, the seasons come in a cycle. No season is permanent. In the same manner, in human life also bad period and good period come in cycles. So, if bad period is running, we should not worry. We should continue to work hard and hope for better days.

·         The autumn and spring can also be taken as metaphors for death and birth. Life does not end with death. There is a hope of re-birth.

·         Thus, the poem ends on a very positive note.
