1. Q. Critically appreciate the poem “One Day I Wrote Her Name…”.
Ans: “One
Day I Wrote Her Name..” is a sonnet written by Edmund Spencer. This poem reveals the workmanship of Spencer
in Sonnet writing. The poem is enriched
with beautiful language. Richness of the melody is a remarkable feature of this
poem. The quatrains have independent
rhymes.
The Sonnet reveals his love towards
Elizabeth Boyle. Spencer says that one
day he wrote his beloved’s name on the seashore. But, the waves came and washed away her
name. He wrote her name for the second
time. But a big tide made his efforts
futile. Looking at his wasteful efforts,
his beloved laughed and said that it was not possible to make her name
permanent. She further said that she did
not herself want to be immortal. Hence,
she asked Spencer to stop his efforts.
But, Spencer said that her virtues should not go unrecognized. Hence, he wanted to make her virtues
permanent by writing poetry on her. He
felt that her name would be written even in heaven because of his poetry. He believes that if death controls
everything, love will make their life grateful and fresh.
This poem reveals the highest
philosophy of Spencer that life will be controlled by death, but love makes the
human life grateful and fresh.
