The Last Leaf - Short story - by O. Henry - Notes - SUMMARY

The Last Leaf
-          O.Henry
“The Last Leaf” is a story written by O.Henry, whose original name is William Sydney Porter. This story is a heart-touching rendering of the sacrifice made by an old artist Mr. Behrman.

Sue and Jhonsy are two young ladies. They have an art studio in an old three-storey building. Jhonsy is attacked by Pneumonia and becomes very weak. She imagines a connection between an old ivy vine which is shedding its leaves and her own life. She foolishly believes that once the last leaf falls, she also dies.

Mr. Behrman is an old artist who lives in the same building. He is a heavy drinker. He is a failure in art but always thinks of creating his masterpiece before his death. When he comes to know about the fancy of Jhonsy, he expresses his worry. At night, he paints an ivy-leaf on the brick wall. Drenched in rain, he is attacked by Pneumonia and dies. But, looking at the everlasting last leaf on the wall, Jhonsy thinks positively and regains her health.

Thus, Mr. Behrmann, who appears as an old, foolish, failed artist not only creates a master-piece, but also gives life to Jhonsy with his sacrifice.
