I Too - I too Sing - Poem - Langston Hughes - Notes - SUMMARY

I, Too
-- Langston Hughes

The Poem “I, Too” was written by Langston Hughes, a Black American poet.  In this brief and simple poem, Hughes declares the faith and optimism of the Black American.

The Negroes were patiently tolerating all discrimination and ill-treatment. But, they were certain that their power and worth will be recognized some day.

This poem is about the self-assertion of a Negro in America.  The Masters of the Negro servant make him eat in the kitchen when the guests come.  But he does not feel ashamed. Instead, he eats more and grows stronger. At latter day, when the guests come, they will not dare to limit him to the kitchen.  The Negro will sit along with them.  Further, he will get appreciation for his beauty.  This poem is an indication of the poet’s indomitable spirit and optimism for a better future.
