Refugee
Mother and Child
--Chinua
Achebe
“Refugee
Mother and Child” is a poem written by Chinua Achebe, a Nigerian poet.
This poem presents a realistic picture of a
refugee mother and her child. The visual
quality of the poem makes it all the more pathetic. The squalor and filth of
the refugee camp is created with picturesque description.
The
poet compares the refugee mother to Madonna, the picture of Virgin Mary. The air is heavy with the odour of diarrhoea
from the unwashed children. With their washed out ribs and dried up bellies,
the children struggle to walk. E
xcept
the mother seen by the poet, all most all other mothers stopped worrying about
their dying children. There is a ghost like smile on her face. She combs the hair on the bare skull of her
dying child. This would have been an act
of no importance anywhere else in the world. But, here in the refugee camp, she
does it with such a care as putting flowers on a tiny grave.
