ON HIS HAVING ARRIVED AT
THE AGE OF TWENTY THREE
n JOHN MILTON
“On
his having arrived at the age of twenty three” is a wonderful sonnet written by
John Milton. It starts with Milton’s
complaint about his immaturity of mind. It ends with his immense faith in
God.
Milton blames Time as the ‘subtle
thief’ of youth. She has stolen his
twenty three years on her wings. Spring comes late into his life. It does not bless him with any output. His immature appearance adds to the trouble. His inner talents remain unknown to the
world.
The
worry about not achieving anything depressed Milton very much. Yet, he is hopeful that some timely happy
spirit will bless him one day. It may be
less or more, soon or late. It may even be in its strictest measure. Milton is prepared to receive anything
according to the will of God. The last
two lines of the poem affirm Milton’s faith in God: “All is… as ever in my
great Task-Master’s eye”.
