Laugh and Be Merry - Poem - by John Masefield

 LAUGH AND BE MERRY
-          JOHN MASEFIELD
John Masefield’s poem “Laugh and Be Merry” advocates positive approach to life.  As the life goes, one should laugh and make the world a happy place with a song.  We should laugh because the life is very short. The life-span is like a delicate thread. Hence, one should live with joy. One should laugh proudly because human beings alone can laugh.

Masefield feels that the world can be bettered by eliminating wrongs and realizing that God has created heaven and earth for the joy of human beings.  The God has filled the cup of deep blue sky with red wine of joy. The stars are made for our joy. Even the dear green earth reflects the joy of God.  Hence, we should derive joy out of them.

The poet compares the life of man on this earth to a lodger’s stay at an inn (hotel). Therefore, men should live happily like brothers until the dance stops and the music ends. We should take life like a game and play it sportively till the end.
