My
Brother, My Brother
- Norah Burke
‘My brother, my brother’ is a story
written by Norah Burke, an English writer. This story is about the heroism of a
jungle boy in India.
Sher Singh was the first son of Sher
Singh Bahadur, a famous, courageous hunter.
He was about twelve years old. His younger brother Kunwar was suffering
from serious illness. He could not find
his father who went into the forest for hunting. His mother had to look after
the house and the cattle. Sher Singh decided to take his younger bother to a
hospital in Kalaghat, which was about fifty miles from their place. He carried
his brother in a sling made by his mother.
His
journey to the town was a difficult one.
He had to go through the jungle and cross two rivers. On his way, he
escaped a cobra, a herd of elephants courageously. With great difficulty, he
crossed the two rivers and reached the road. After reaching Kalaghat, Sher
Singh admitted his brother in the hospital.
To earn money for medicines and food, he worked at the railyard. With the doctor’s assurance of his brother’s
recovery, the story ends in a positive note.
